Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
