Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
