Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
