EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts point out that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
