RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
